Nicholas Graves, PhD

Speaker:

Nicholas Graves, PhD, Deputy Director, Health Services and Systems Research at Duke-NUS and the SingHealth Duke-NUS Health Services Research Institute
In this virtual seminar, Professor Graves will discuss: • Despite advances in medicine that have helped clinicians save lives and lengthen the time to death, some treatments have little chance of conferring meaningful benefits to patients. • These treatments that are often referred to as 'futile' (although this is a value-laden and contested term); more recently they are referred to as 'potentially inappropriate' or 'non-beneficial.' • Evidence that shows, for various reasons, doctors provide treatments they perceive as non-beneficial. • These treatments that may be costly to health services and cause distress to patients, families, and healthcare professionals. • The INTERACT trial underway in three tertiary referral hospitals with the aim of reducing non-beneficial treatments. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Professor. Graves' areas of expertise are health economics, health services research, decision-making, and cost-effectiveness. He enjoys projects that reveal how health services can be improved at low cost or with cost savings.
