Duke GeriaTreks – Cox Mountain Trail

Saturday November 4, 9:00am – 10:30am

Join us for a Fall Hike on the Cox Mountain Trail, a 3.75 mile moderate hike that starts at a cool suspension bridge.  Those wanting a shorter (and flatter) hike can peel off and do the Fanny’s Ford loop after the initial section.  Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.  Two and four legged family members welcome!  When you enter the state park, drive all the way to the end of the road and park in the lot near the bathrooms (or the adjacent overflow lot).  https://enotrails.com/cox-mountain-trail.htm

Good News:

  • Congratulations to Geriatrics faculty members Maria Marquine and Mamata Yanamadala who have both been promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine!
  • Dave Madden and Jenna Merenstein have a recent ADRC-related publication in NeuroImage:  Quantitative susceptibility mapping of brain iron in health aging and cognition
  • ICYMI:  Nathan Boucher and colleagues were awarded $60,000 by the National Center for Homelessness among Veterans (https://www.va.gov/homeless/nchav/index.html) to work with Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) to analyze new VA health system survey data on older Veteran homelessness and conduct in-depth interviews and user centered design sessions resulting in homelessness implementation blueprints to pilot for two large VA networks. Their project is titled “Supporting Community Partnerships to Optimize HUD-VASH Services for Older and Disabled Veterans” and the aims are as follows:
    • Aim One: Analyze FY23 HUD-VASH nationally-collected assessment data. These data will a) help HUDVASH directly understand aspects of the local context of community partnerships and b) inform content for the Aim 2 interview guide. We will analyze nationally-collected local assessment data using descriptive analysis of quantitative data and qualitative content analysis of open-ended data.
    • Aim Two: Identify facilitators of and constraints to developing local community partnerships. We will conduct virtual semi-structured interviews with HUD-VASH VISN-based geriatric specialists or their designees (N=18), using rapid qualitative analysis to identify salient themes. Based on Aims’ 1 and 2 findings, our team will draft an implementation blueprint for VISN 1 and for VISN 6.
    • Aim Three: Refine the implementation blueprints employing User-Centered Design. We will convene two VISN-wide user-centered design teams of community, HUD-VASH partners, and Veterans and facilitate two rounds of deliberations in VISNs 1 and 6 to finalize an implementation blueprint for each of these VISNs.
